Final Reflection Blog

Hey guys! So this is officially our final blog, and I am so excited for the holidays! I have to say I enjoyed taking this class along with all of you. I am not much of a textbook reader but I enjoyed reading the textbook for this class. It taught me a lot about the different aspects of social media and how relevant it is to the world today. It also helped me gain a better understanding of each type of social media. Although I am adamite with my use of social media, reading this textbook made me want to explore the other aspects of it I never knew about.

Small class assignments, such as the blog post we were required to do this semester affected my understanding of social media. I now know how to use it professionally because it made me more aware of what people are looking for in the business world. It also gave me an understanding of how to use certain tools I had never used before such as tagging and search engines depending on the type of social media.

Along with the smaller assignments we were given, we also had a final project. I enjoyed researching and working through this project because we were able to use the design thinking process to assist our final client Fetiche. The design thinking process involves researching, brainstorming, prototyping and etc. We were able to use all of these tools to effectively help our client by understanding what they did and didn’t need. We were also able to provide them with new ideas to promote their products and bring in more clientele.

Within the design thinking process, I like that it allows you to think freely and remain open minded before coming up with a final choice. However, the design process in some cases can be difficult when the research provided isn’t enough to complete a prototype. This makes the entire process more challenging and lengthy to complete.

Throughout this course the social media strategy that surprised me the most was the use of social media zones. When I first enrolled in this class I was expecting to learn more about what I already knew which I did. But in turn I also learned about things I never knew existed. Such as the basics of content on different social media sites. The amount each site has, and how each social media zone carries a specific target market.

Overall, learning about social media in a professional environment is valuable to me because I will now be able to use the knowledge I have learned towards my own professional career. As an impending buyer, social media is widely used so by having a clear understanding of what is deemed professional and what is not I can further myself within my career. This has increased my understanding of my merchandising career by giving me the ambition to want to explore more and see what else social media has to offer in reflection to merchandising. In all, I like the way this class was conducted I feel that I gained a valuable learning experience from all of the work that we did. However, I would like to have done more client based projects throughout the course because I found that I learned more having a hands-on experience rather than just from the textbook. Thanks for reading, I hope you all have a wonderful break!

  1. Lauryn,

I totally agree with you that I actually enjoyed learning more about social media, though I had previous knowledge of it. This class should have more client-based assignments because I understood better when I did hands on work rather than read.
